Efficiency, sarcasm, and natty fur!

This monkey and this robot once had a system: three blogs for three subjects. But it was complicated and vague and usually ended in feces throwing. So we have combined all three into a melange of media reviews and links and excessive blather, so as to reduce the burden on your short attention span.

In the right column, Monkey + Robot have compiled for you a compendium of sassy, savvy and in the know media reviews and tidbits, for your time-wasting pleasure. And lest you poke at us with sticks or cut off our power supply, the reviews are now selectable through those perky drop-down menus. Monkey + Robot Film and TV reviews, Wrongrobot's Comic Stash, and more.

Grab a chunk of melon and some Demoral, because in the left column, we have accumulated for you every snappy link we found amusing, entertaining, provocatively witty, or frankly, just colorful, with easy to understand small words so monkeybites can follow along. Such is Robotic Root!

Entertainment Media Ratings System:

Wrongrobot's Robot Rating: 1-10 Clicks, more indicating a happier robot!

Monkeybites' Monkey Rating: 1-10 Ooks! More indicating a mouthful of rotting simian teeth and lips curled in monkey pleasure!

IronLung's Robot Rating: 1-10 Clanks! More indicating a red-eyed, slack-jawed, blissed-out, ride-pimped dizzy droid! [this is good]

Vicbot's Robot Rating: 1-10 Whirrs! More indicating data that computes well with others.

Film Review: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
2/5/2004

Where to begin. I saw this one thousand times when I was around 13 or so, and I decided recently to test my qualified memory of its quality. While I admit the film didn't hold up to my childhood image of it, largely due to flow issues, it was in many ways more interesting to watch as an adult. Now more familiar with Terry Gilliam’s body of fanciful work, it was intriguing to imagine him, as usual, struggling to navigate the minefield of meddlesome financiers, confrontational producers, escalating budget, thieving locals, drunken wagers, tempting ingénues, and his own admittedly manic personality. The set gossip was more prolific as this film was released than most others of it's time, though more typical of the rumor mills of today, and it was considered a flop when theater revenues could not match the $45m+ spent in production, the third or fourth highest at the time. It was criticized as being obtuse, protracted, uneven, cheap-looking or over-stimulating depending, and ultimately far too left field for mainstream audiences. I thought it was a daring film.

The plot is loosely based on the elaborate Western European myths of the tall tales of a German officer who took to fanciful exaggeration in recounting his incredible adventures. This was all, in turn, rooted in reality, as the true Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Munchausen was well known for exaggerating his adventurous military exploits, as an officer in the Russian army who fought against the Turks in the mid 18th century. Apparently a jewel thief, Rudolf Erich Raspe, published volumes of tales purported to be Baron Munchausen's biography, and the true Baron wasn't compelled to dispute the colorful stories, and the literary character was revisited several times.

More interesting to me is Terry Gilliam's use of this elaborate fusion of reality and fantasy as a means of exploring the tenuous line separating the two. He uses a thematic element of a play, about Munchausen in progress at the opening of them film during a Turkish bombardment of the nearby city walls, which is interrupted by an elderly Munchausen calling foul and describing his versions of the "true events" on-stage, which seamlessly transitions into flashbacks of the elaborate encounters, far more fabulous than the play had originally suggested. This internally-referencing format for the film is very creative, and allows Gilliam to toy with the concepts of memory, age, youthful imagination, and is probably the first incidence I can recall of retroactive continuity, as through retelling the stories, the Baron actually changes the reality of the present, as characters introduced in the opening scene take additional roles within his story. I've read an interpretation that Munchausen was merely weaving a fantasy involving the disheveled citizens of a town ravaged by an imagined bombardment by Turkish invaders fabricated or manipulated by the governing attaché in order to steal their trade goods and pensions, and that he inspired them to open the gates and see for themselves that the war was a ruse. This is a perfectly reasonable explanation. However, it never occurred to me as a young lad to question what the hell was going on, and I think that attitude still works for me today. It's easy to set aside the rational explanation as you watch, and become immersed in the imaginative world Gilliam shows us, which I think was the point in the first place.

The characters were well-costumed and cleverly acted. James Neville is captivating as the good Baron, whose age changes along with his mood. He somehow manages to make this outlandish, gallant figure charming and believable, whether plucking immeasurable quantities of roses from his breast pocket for the ladies, or hitching rides on cannonballs. His colorful cohorts include Eric Idle as Berthold, the Fastest Man in the World (Look! He's got Champion's thighs from Triplets of Bellville!), Charles McKeown as Adolphus (and a writing credit, too), the virtually blind adventurer with spectacles that allow him to see, and shoot, half-way around the world, Winston Dennis as Albrecht, the Strongman (who incidentally played the dream state Samurai Warrior in Gilliam's Brazil, and the minotaur in Time Bandits) and finally, young Sarah Polley, a remarkably well-mannered little squirt who would later go on to be the actress in Go, the Weight of Water, and other films. Oliver Reed makes an appearance as Vulcan, looking a lot like I fear he did on one of the frequent drinking binges that eventually did him in while filming Gladiator. Finally, let's not forget Uma Thurman, a mere 17 years of age at the time, and in her third film, the first to really be seen by anyone, a hair ahead of Dangerous Liaisons later that year. I remember as a youth being enamored by her performance, or at least that's how I'm describing it now. Robin Williams does some cocaine-fueled scenery chewing that I understand was filmed directly after landing from a trans-Atlantic flight, to replace Sean Connery, who pulled out with attitude over the down-sized role. Williams was hilarious to me as a kid in this role, but extremely coked-out and tiresome to me this time around.

Several points caught my interest in this viewing, amidst the competing elaborately-designed sets and alternating extremely silly B-movie backdrops. Early on, when gazing up in astonishment at the Baron's clever scheme to escape a surrounding (stereotypically bloodthirsty) Turkish horde by creating a hot air balloon out of a small ship tethered to like one million pairs of women's knickers, Berthold exclaims "This...is the dawn...of the age of lovely, intimate things!"
Later on, Jonathan Pryce, as the Right Ordinary Horatio Jackson, the villain of the piece, glowers at the Baron's craft as it sails away, and mutters "Well, he won't get far on hot air and fantasy." Which is exactly what he does.
Then there's the spontaneously somber Weird Nuclear Proliferation Warning Speech by Vulcan when revealing the secret weapon he designed for whomever: "The best part is you don't have to watch a single one of them die. You just sit back thousands of miles away from the battlefield and simply press a button!"
Uma's entrance from within a massive clamshell was a sight to behold, certainly, but soon after, when the group are trapped within the belly of a sea monster, I began to grow weary, particularly of the Python-esque scratchy high-pitched screeching Adolphus was doing, not sure why.
Michael Kamen's score is brilliantly complex, with horns and thundering tympany drums competing with the deafening sound effects Gilliam stuffs ever scene with until your ears bleed.
In the climactic final battle scene between Baron and the Turkish horde, Gilliam deconstructs the horrors of war down to a choreographed dance, as soldiers formed ranks that cascade away from the retreating camera in a pan-out shot, and the Baron glides by the troops, beheading a number of them effortlessly like clipping the buds from flowers. It was a surreal scene in a film that not 20 minute earlier was lecturing us on the insanity of contemporary warfare.

I think overall the film remains entertaining without being as dated as one would think, and while the production values slip, and the script all but disappears in the second act, the elaborate and imaginative hallucinary world is trademark Gilliam. He told interviewers at the time that this was the third film in a tribeca on the Journey of Man (Time Bandits being Youth, Brazil being Middle Age, and this being Elderly) though this may have been, as Roger Ebert suggested in a 1989 review of the film, Gilliam's own horse tethered to the steeple, referring to an infamous Munchausen tale where, traveling through a snowstorm, the Baron tied his horse to a tiny branch that revealed itself, after the thaw, to be the top of a church steeple, thereby trapping the horse on the roof...

It's always nice and clever to close with a piece of nutty trivia, so here goes: Munchausen's Syndrome is a psychological disorder marked by extreme hypochondria.
