Efficiency, sarcasm, and natty fur!

This monkey and this robot once had a system: three blogs for three subjects. But it was complicated and vague and usually ended in feces throwing. So we have combined all three into a melange of media reviews and links and excessive blather, so as to reduce the burden on your short attention span.

In the right column, Monkey + Robot have compiled for you a compendium of sassy, savvy and in the know media reviews and tidbits, for your time-wasting pleasure. And lest you poke at us with sticks or cut off our power supply, the reviews are now selectable through those perky drop-down menus. Monkey + Robot Film and TV reviews, Wrongrobot's Comic Stash, and more.

Grab a chunk of melon and some Demoral, because in the left column, we have accumulated for you every snappy link we found amusing, entertaining, provocatively witty, or frankly, just colorful, with easy to understand small words so monkeybites can follow along. Such is Robotic Root!

Entertainment Media Ratings System:

Wrongrobot's Robot Rating: 1-10 Clicks, more indicating a happier robot!

Monkeybites' Monkey Rating: 1-10 Ooks! More indicating a mouthful of rotting simian teeth and lips curled in monkey pleasure!

IronLung's Robot Rating: 1-10 Clanks! More indicating a red-eyed, slack-jawed, blissed-out, ride-pimped dizzy droid! [this is good]

Vicbot's Robot Rating: 1-10 Whirrs! More indicating data that computes well with others.

TV Reviews: Law & Order Season Premiere, Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Revenge of the Trees, Enterprise
10/13/2003

Law and Order: Criminal Intent: I finally caught the Season Premiere last night, thanks to my Robot's Little Helper, the TiVo. Viewings of this show this season will be delayed and erratic, as both NBC and USA are broadcasting it against other shows being recorded, so I have to wait until TiVo decided enough is enough and grants me my L&O:CI fix. The Premiere opens with a brief reference to Detective Eames carrying the surrogate child of her sister, a thankfully-consistent L&O trademark way of addressing offscreen both the personal lives of the characters, and the changes to the actors themselves, without winding them up into soap-opera content for the show. The only time I can remember the franchise deviating from this formula was the brief experiment in the first season of Special Victims Unit where the home life of Detective Stabler in particular was shown frequently to add insight into the character's issues with the sex crimes he investigated (as if we needed more information, as he and everyone else on the show wore their biases on their sleaves, thanks to some very heavy handed dialog, ie. "Don't worry when you feel something on this job, Elliot. Worry when you dont!") but thankfully, the series returned to normal and continued on in more-or-less All Business Mode. So, now that they have covered Kathryn Erbe's impending pregnancy, we move on to the crime of the night, a surreal puree of architecture stereotyping. The plot appears to be 75% classic Frank Lloyd Wright infamy with 25% WTC competition scandal for context. It was pretty amusing. The picture painted of the young architect found dead in the opener is actually fairly dead-on for a metropolitan architecture studio lifestyle: his clothes were right, he looked the part, the studio seemed set up feasibly, the other young architects, etc. seemed plausible enough to my eyes, and by that I was impressed enough to disregard the goofy design work that supposedly was a contender for the WTC competition. Granted, the images shown in this episode looked far more professional than what was actually submitted in the real-world competition, but I digress. The episode veers into outer space, however, when they begin to investigate the lifestyle of the Superstar Architect, seemingly patterned after FLW's idiosyncrasies. He's filthy rich (hardly) with references to lean periods between projects (true), he's a womanizer and lusty egotist (true) working in a practice sardine-packed with hot blondes in heels (uh, where is this firm again?), he's riding the coattails of his own earlier work while obsessing over his legacy (plausible enough) but juggles three wives with none the wiser (hello, GOOGLE him and you'd find them all over the place. Crazy!) The image the episode paints of the attitude of the signature architect in some ways isn't too far off base, but there are a few dialog references to the notion that architects are trained to be glory-hounding egotists in love with their own immortality. As an architect myself, I can tell you, I'm in love with cheddar, Kid A and a good ride on the Bianchi Veloce. Immortality is out of my personal reach so far. It was fun watching the Superstar Architect Who Was Smarmy in Fugitive and Vindictive in the TV Version of Robin Hood slowly fall apart, and frankly, it was fun listening to my girlfriend counting off the number of times a leggy blonde could be seen wandering around in the background for "context". The episode doesn't end with a typical L&O:CI punch like they usually do, but I will say, watching the estranged wife kicking architectural models over was very satisfying for me personally.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: "Revenge of the Trees": This episode, like all since the first season, was off and on funny, but the concept of a deep fried COW utter-injected with butter, cheese (cheddar and pepperjack both) and ranch dressing was eerily reminiscent on this recent article on the obesity and health woes of Warm-Blooded Amurkin Pigskin Couch Ornaments and the marketing of those Hungry Man FatStuff TV Dinners offering 1+ pounds of fried cheesey beef bombs. Read the article here:
SFGate.com: A Casket Full Of Cheese Fries
Hey, sports fans! Eat this toxic Swanson TV dinner, enjoy a monster-size death

Anyway, the worst of it all was that even as the udder exploded on everyone, and the fly-encrusted hot oils were pouring down the sidewalk, I still thought it sounded kinda sorta yummy. Uh-oh.

Enterprise: This season sees either the last attempt to inject drama into the Star Trek franchise, or the death rattle of this series, either one. Maybe both. The initial concept of Enterprise, the first Starfleet Warp-powered emporatory vessel, and it's inexperienced crew being anal probed by like every other species out there while discovering technology like "space phase pistols" and "disguised ion trails", was actually very, very interesting for the longtime Techies, though probably not the Trekkies. The recontextualized technology shown in the effects (a ship more detailed and complex than in any other series) was offset by the imaginative retro methodology (military-style jumpsuits, occasional use of EVA suits, shoot first/ask later behavior, slow development of franchise precedents like Captain's Logs, phasers, photon torpedos, teleportation, iffy Prime Directives, and the meddling and manipulation of the Vulcans) and the whole thing seemed raw and different at first. But I think as the ratings slipped, theymoved back into typical inconsequential Trekology, and I lost interest in the show. At the end of last season, they apparently continued the UPN tradition and found frequent reasons for quarantine oil rub-downs and alien sex ritual exploration, as well as lots of presumably Romulan time-travel intrigue, and political strife back home withe those pesky Vulcans. I started watching the show again this summer and caught the last few episodes of last season, including a thankful return to Special Effects Used to Make the Show More Interesting, with a laser blasting a staight line of Super Destruction down the Eastern seaboard (those poor Southerners, first Scorched Earth policy, now this!) and then some claoked ships, military Special Forces type action on Enterprise (though they carry those backpacks the bike messengers like) and some more interesting alien Bugaboos.

This season, with the writing on the wall that they need to increase viewship or watch the franchise vent it's fluids and slip into rigor, the series opens with war war war war WAR! We've got plotting alien bad nasties, including some inhuman designs over which the ghost of Roddenberry again would choke on his cheese fries, including a pissy insectizoid and some surreal narwhales with beefy biceps. Then some fun "anomolies" which give the effects team an opportunity to render waves of physics-wonking throughout the ship, like undulating desks, slow-mo anti-grav coffee, creepy Poltergeist-style cargo leaping from wall to wall, that sort of thing. Plus, Archer is all edgy and driven now, which is a bit refreshing after the positive, easy-listening decaf character he played in the earlier episodes. T'Pol has apparently left her Vulcan post and remained on Enterprise, and while she inexplicably retains Second in Command, though at the very least, she's more subdued and a little less arch, which is a relief, as the fact that she vocally opposed everything anyone said in the previous seasons was getting annoying. Quiet aloofness is more fun. This ep involves a trip to a seedy mining planet to purchase a Xindi slave to interrogate for "planetary spatial coordinates" which seems analagous to someone kidnapping me and demanding the lattitude/longitude of San Francisco. The Star-Wars-ification of the series continues with a Death Star, pirates, torture, trash compactor scaling (oh, actually magma ductwork, but let's not get technical) and lastly, tons of danger, suspense and intrigue! The episodes are certainly more satisfying than those fuzzy "T'Pal has Mating Issues" or "Doctor Whatsisname is Possessed by a Howling Monkey with a Prosthetic Arm" eps from last season. Speaking of howling monkeys with prosthetics, late last season we saw the inexplicable introduction of the Borg to Earth's arctic circle. Now, I love to see retroactive continuity references in these episodes towards future ST continuity. I geek out all over myself over stuff like that. Having a Klingon being shot in the stomach by an Earth farmer with a Space Shotgun as first contact was fabulous. But when we have an encounter with the Borg and a guarantee for an invasion in, oh, 400 years (ST:TNG era) that seems to be completely written off at the end of the ep, it's a little too cheeky for me. I want more retconned references! Future episodes promise deceit, subterfuge and insidious alien plotting. Sounds good to me. The inclusion of the Special Forces guys, and their sharpshooting and sniping in the premiere sp, also implies a Rockem Sockem future for the crew in upcoming episodes, and if the other analogies to the Abyss hold true, maybe we'll see a coup before too long. Just lets either move Enterprise to HBO where we can actually experience some xenoanatomy, or keep the T'Pol rubdowns to a minumum. Less boobies, more lasers.

For continuity junkies like me, at whom the writers, and effects people laugh at over coffee, here's a fun site dedicated to continuity gaffes on Enterprise:
