Thanks to our seven readers, who risked th e loss of gainful employment, as we do, by browsing Monkey+Robot virtually continuously over the last month. We had our highest monthly hit record in July, at 1300 hits, which ain't bad, considering this site is neither advertized nor in link pools... of course, we all know at least half of those hits were IronLung checking and rechecking the Batman Preview to see if it's true that you can actually see Bale's "Bat-hammock" in one still...

Nick Cage Marries Waitress Alice Kim: If you check Google News on this subject, the vast majority of articles obsess about the fact that Cage is a double-divorcee, and that Kim is so much younger than he is. Granted they all get this from the same newswires. Nonetheless, say what you will about celebrities signing away their privacy in their ego-seeping media sluttery, it's got to be a tough nut to read that on all the tabloid covers. Hard enough to start a marriage without being reminded at every corner that it really can't posiibly even begin to work so go back to the strip club you boozehound, etc. This robot thinks it's refreshing enough to hear that a big-type Hollywood actor went with his instincts on a non-Hollywood relationship. And I also heard that she likes robots.

Creepy Conventions: This robot fears conventions. Granted, being technically a small-press comics publisher, if you want to throw that around, means that I'm readjusting to the fact that they are a necessity to getting your product, quite literally, to market. After being at this year's Alternative Press Expo (APE) in San Francisco, handing out promo materials for Third Rail Design Lab [ www.thirdraildesignlab.com] hint hint... I found that being their as a creator rubbing elbows with other small-timers was surprisingly inspiring. That was a kiloton of creative energy all in one place. On the other side of the spectrum, for someone like me, is the San Diego Comic Con International. This is where the big names are represented, signing and doing commissions and releasing buzzworthy quotes and previews and panels and what have you, and now, cross-shopping film projects as well. I didn't have the book ready, so I didn't go, but it's been fun reading all the buzz and back-stage stories of odd things going on down there. Another aspect of the larger cons that is fun and terribly wrong at the same time, is the earnest costume crowd: not committed enough to be cosplay quality, but boy, see what Red Bull and Quaaludes can get you if you try hard enough! Not interested in the Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or Boobette people, but here and there, some interesting subjects have been documented. Some of my favorites:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: GOOD- points for Master Shakes wrong hand
Freaky Blue Transgendered Warrior: BAD- points for earnestness though.
Worlds Finest: Superman and Batman: GOOD- Supes is a little peckish, but that's quite possibly the Batman we SHOULD be seeing in the new film, had the stars aligned and the Year One script actually stuck... he looks bad ass, if a little smug... I guess he DID just fire Robin in the comics, so that's something to be smug about I suppose.
Comic Creators: GOOD- This are actually the enigmatic Wachowski Brothers, who like have never been photographed and don't have reflections and one is a cross-dresser and they're secretly still pretty damn cool despite those Matrix sequels, since they are now publishing comics by Geoff Darrow and Steve Skroce, two of the bestest comics types stolen from the industry to storyboard and design all that Matrix stuff, damn them... actually, I'm amused that they had wrong name tags on and were handing out crap and no one knew they were who they are...unless they aren't...but they secretly ARE.
Shee-Ra: GOOD- I chose this pic because it was literally the ONLY one I've seen, out of about seven pic sites from the con, where the cute girl in costume wasn't either super slutty or really out of control nuclear awkward... this one's just nice. Of course, pan down and she might be wearing a prosthetic Free Willy... I don't know.
Comic Creators: GOOD- these guys whipped up terribly realistic costumes of M+R fave creators Andy Diggle and Jock, of Losers brilliance. It's amazing, the likeness. I heard the accents were wrong though.
BEST OF THE CON: Ugly Doll- GREAT! Really, nothing else needs to be said. Just look at that. I'd trade my beloved Karmann Ghia just to have this guy/girl stand around my loft for parties...

You know, mining the internet for interesting comic buzz and such has it's ups and downs. And frequently, stories offer both. Like great characters with creepy creative teams, or horrible projects with brilliant creators. I don't know where this falls into it, but despite my general queasiness that the Space Ghost Comic is going forward (and not our beloved wrong Ghostal from Adult Swim, i'm afraid, but a serious stab at Toth's cheeky fellow) I have to admit that Alex Ross could make just about anyone look rad... I'd still rather he'd say something like "Zorak wasn't dead...but now, he is. With a WRENCH!"
So says...Wrongrobot!
